My love of all things varietal began not so many years ago when I found myself going over the hill to Napa Valley at least once a year to explore the various regions and terroirs. It is, after all, not a very long drive from Reno, NV. I began paying attention to the tours and listening to the tasting rooms explain the nose and notes. How the weather, the soils, the water, even the fires ☹ changed the grapes and the effect on that vintage.
I found renewed fascination in a beverage I had enjoyed many times but saw in a new light. I began to love the boutique wineries of the Russian River Valley & found a strong attraction to all things Pinot Noir.
The flavor/color/even varietal differences that a single winery could put out from one year to the next would vary greatly and made it fun to seek out vintages that appealed to me.
I gleaned a larger appreciation for blends: why those grapes and why that ratio. I see you GSM! And now more recently, a GST I can’t get enough of. More of that later.
So, now I find myself seeking new areas to learn about and found the gems located in the El Dorado and Amador Counties. The Sierra Foothills are also a very short road trip from home and proving to be a whole new world of wine-seeking.
In addition, there is a burgeoning wine scene taking shape here in Reno, NV. This a very exciting development I will be following quite closely.
I can’t wait to share my adventures here, for those who wish to come along. While I may be the Daily Wino on a consistent basis, I hope to gain enough content to make the site a daily visitor as well.
Merci – Grazie – Cheers!
